Have you also tried pressing Fn+F4 to change display? I'm mildly
surprised that F4 on its own would do it - perhaps this is controlled by
a software application.
Here are a few other items on the Internet which I came across:
A forum poster (albeit for different laptop model) has managed to get an
external monitor running from power-on by opening the case and
disconnecting the ribbon cable for the internal display:

The CQ58 service manual can be found here, although having skimmed
through it I didn't notice any mention of any lid closure switch/sensor.

I'm not familiar with your specific model, so coming to an end to my
