I'm doing it by an even more perverse way by NFS exporting /var/mail on the
server, with maildir to avoid locking issues. Works a treat.

Mailing lists are gated into a closed news server where I use NNTP to read
them because newsreaders are much better than mail programs for reading the
threaded discussions of mailing lists. Again, it's lovely to use.
