I said several italian words at the last meeting.

1. Sporgenza.

I am fairly sure that this does mean 'projection' or shelf in the sense of
jutting out, and is a word
that one might need to use quite a lot in an article describing the
preferred method of locomotion
of Miss Lara Croft; though I didn't think it rght to mention that lady at
the meeting.

2. Metameri

This is a zoological term which in English is 'metameres' and could be used
in describing the
structure of, say, an earthworm (schooldays biology) or other segmented
creature. In vulgar
English it would be 'segment', though I suspect that Italian has other words
to use for segment
in various other contexts.

3. Segnale midollare

This has me completely flummoxed. Segnale (different word from Segni which
does mean 'Signs')
has about 5 main meanings, but the core meaning is Indications in the sense
of signposting, and
I am wondering whether it might mean 'Appearances' e.g.

Q. Were there any indications of a break-in?
A. No, the appearances did not suggest a forced entry.

Midollare means Medullary in the sense of marrow, and I wonder whether my
phrase might be
translated as "The medullary canal appears ...", but this seems to be
stretching the Italian a fair
bit.

This, of course, is how we got onto the topic of typography, not as
grotesque a leap as you
might at first think.
