[Wylug-discuss] RE: Rob Enderle at SCOForum 2004

I am horrified, but we fought for free speech (free is a good word in this
context) in lots of wars.

Its simple. I used to be fairly neutral about SCO. Since their pathetic
suing exercise against Novell and IBM (amongst several), I have made a
positive anti-SCO stance.

We are in the process of buying a new Commercial Software System. The
company that sold it to us wanted us to get SCO Unix. I insisted we use
Linux or forget it. They are - reluctantly - putting the system on our Linux
Box. If SCO had not been stupid about Linux, I might not have fought using
SCO.

Now I tell everybody about Linux, I denigrate SCO every time I can.

So SCO - you sow what you reap - you will lose big time.

Keep up the Linux!

All,

Have you read this:

http://www.sco.com/2004forum/agenda/Enderle_keynote_SCO-Forum2004.html

I'm personally offended at many parts of it. The guy's on a different
planet, it seems.

- - We are compared to the perpetrators of the Nuremburg experiments.

- - Free software is just a scam.

- - We are a sad group of folks, only supporting Linux because we lack any
other cause to support.

- - Linux hurts people who work for a living. (Depends if your employer is
an unadaptive dinosaur like MS or SCO, or a switched on company like IBM
or Novell).

- - He implies^Wstates that war veterans died for SCO's rights to make
their claims about Linux???? (OK, but if you bring a lawsuit based on
claims you know are false, that's illegal, isn't it?)

- - He admits that has personal (not professional) reasons to support MS
and dislike IBM.

- - He suggests that IBM is in the process of a management cover-up along
the lines of Enron and Worldcom (Who knows? But SCO is a little thin on
evidence so far).

Yeah,

He's written a "follow-up" to it here:

http://www.linuxinsider.com/story/free_software_open_source/35732.html

and there's a related Groklaw story here:

http://www.groklaw.net/article.php?story=20040812070059503

I don't pay too much attention to him myself, he's paid to write
inflamatory rubbish.

The whole thing is a wind-up. It's badly argued, inflammatory, contains
wild insinuations and zero proof of any of them. I wouldn't get worked
up about it - he seems to think he's god's gift to IT, but this piece
is going to cause him acute embarrassment in the future.

Why I say insinuations: he is very careful not to say anything that is
(demonstrably) untrue, merely placing things close together. For example,
he doesn't say (F|f)ree software people are exactly like Nuremburg Nazis,
he merely tries to make the audience think of them together:

"In college, both graduate and undergraduate, I was
fascinated with human behavior. I watched the tapes of the
Nuremburg experiments that showcased how people put in
positions of authority could be ordered to torture and kill
other people and that the majority of those tested in the
study failed the "humanity" test. Groups of people can do
really bad things and not failing the humanity test became a
     personal goal.

"Stop for a moment and take the macro view, how does the
behavior of the Linux attack force that has been focused on
SCO and Microsoft really differ from other hate groups. If I
even named these groups I would lose you so I won't, but
     isn't the behavior similar?"

The answer ("No") isn't even worth giving. The same goes for much of
the rest of his speculation.

I particularly like the title; "Free Software and the Idiots Who Buy It".
If you must read it, don't get angry - it's not worth it.

You may also enjoy:

http://www.linuxinsider.com/story/free_software_open_source/35732.html

his follow-up entitled "Free as in Freedom: A Keynote Considered" where
he tries to re-write history a bit more.

Groklaw (of course) responds:

and references a nice point by point analysis of the transcript:
