All,
There seems to be a new (new to me anyway) domain name registration scam
around at the moment. I've had two phone calls regarding domains which I
manage for local businesses.
The gist is:
- - You are told that another company is seeking to register a domain
similar to yours.
- - This other company is local and plans to set up as a rival business.
- - The kind domain name registrar vets all domain registrations for
possible conflicts of interest.
- - They then give you the opportunity to register the similar domains for
a 'reduced' price to nobble your new 'competitor'.
The company is calling themselves 'ISP'. Presumably this is an attempt
to confuse victims into thinking it's their own ISP calling them.
As soon as I started questioning them, mentioning people like Nominet
and generally sounding like I was onto them, they hung up.
If you manage domains for business customers, I'd recommend you let them
know to avoid this obvious scam.
Regards,
James
