Another useful variation on that scheme is to give each machine its
own unique name, and then use alias "service" names.

For example:
gluck.debian.org (www.debian.org,
                  people.debian.org)
auric.debian.org, newraff.debian.org  (ftp-master.debian.org)
haydh.debian.org, nessler.debian.org (alioth.debian.org,
                                      arch.debian.org
                                      svn.debian.org)
[And many, many, other machines I'll not list here.]

As can be seen from the above, the service name can easily be switched
to point from one "real" machine to another.  This means that service
can continue uninterrupted if work needs to be carried out on a
machine, since all that is altered is the alias--the end user won't
even be aware of the change.
