Do you have local accounts and YP accounts?
Is the NIS (YP server) running?
Does getent passwd userid get the correct information?
Have you firewalled the YP port, has someone hacked your NIS server.
NIS isn't exactly the most secure how are you finding the NIS server
broadcast or specific IP or DNS address use ypwhich -m to find out.
Have you configured securenets and done the shadow hack.
Is your PAM configuration correct?

Subject: [Wylug-discuss] Linux connection problem
Hi,
We have a interesting Linux problem.
We have a Linux box which has been running for years with no problems ( as
Linux does!)
However, today, users cannot rlogin to it. However, as root you can, and
when logged in, su - to a typical user works.
I have tried rebooting (first time in over a year) to no effect. The machine
is running yp, but all the config files etc worked OK on Friday an have not
been changed since
.
The problem would appear to be with creating a telnet session for any user
other than root.
Any suggestions anyone?
David
