Last night I shut down my box2, so this morning seemed an ideal time to look
at the Ubuntu live CD. It loaded the desktop, then froze. No mouse, no
keyboard, so re-boot without the CD.
That box has given me endless trouble since the day it was built. Mandrake
10.1 freezes from time to time, with never anything in the log to give me a
clue. The only thing I'm sure of is that it will freeze if anything gives
rise to continuing errors in syslog. It doesn't matter what the error is, it
appears maybe 5 or 6 times, then there's a freeze. Deal with the problem and
it's stable again until next time something gets upset.
There must be a hardware problem, I'm sure, but it's an expensive business to
start replacements without some idea of what's going on. Has anyone any
ideas on troubleshooting this?
I did wonder if it was the video card, but I am running it on the minimal nv
driver. I had problems with the 6119 driver on Mandrake 10.0, and haven't
got around to doing anything about trying the newer one.
Another candidate could be the firewire port on the Audigy card. It's unused,
so I could get rid of it. Is that as easy as commenting out the two lines in
modprobe.conf?
Also, while looking again at these files, I see that modules.conf is showing
as a 1B PCX file - presumably this means it is corrupted. Creative
soundcards still use modules.conf rather than modprobe.preload, so that could
be a candidate. Any advice on this?
As you can see, I'm casting around a lot. Any ideas would be greatly welcome.
Anne
