Hi Anne,

This is possibly a red herring, but since you asked for _any_ ideas, I
thought I aught to mention my experience of an Ubuntu upgrade from
Woarty to Hoary at the weekend.

Basically, the upgrade itself was trouble-free, but I then re-booted to
try out the new kernel image (2.6.10-4) that it had installed.

The reboot itself was fine. I got a gdm prompt with no errors, but when
I tried to start _any_ kind of gnome session I lost all keyboard/mouse
control.

I haven't had time to do any proper diagnostics, but I did find out two
things:

  1. That there was no problem at all if I re-booted with my previous
kernel (2.6.10-1) or an even older one (2.6.8-x).

  2. That I got exactly the same lock-up again when I tried a more
recent kernel image (2.6.11-x) than the default for Hoary.

For what it's worth, I am using Xorg rather than XFree86.

I'm tempted to build my own kernel from the kernel.org sources, but
that's such an arse-ache (due to lousy documentation of the Debian mods)
that I'm not sure that I can be bothered.

Dave
