I'd also go for the wireless router box - just turn the radio off
for your use.

I have a Buffalo unit - I think its this one

They work very nicely with DD-WRT (Buffalo now support DD-WRT).  The  
Buffalo routers also tend to have a reasonable hardware spec - ie  
faster CPU and more RAM than most others, which if you want to do more  
interesting things with it allows you more flexibility.

There are similar units which have USB capability which may give  
additional flexibility too.

The basic routers are cheap, low power and fanless (ie silent).
