The openstreetmap wiki is full of stuff to help you get started.
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Beginners%27_Guide

is a good place to start.

There is also a forum, irc channel (#osm in oftc.net) a newbies
mailing list, and additional presentations on the net, but I find
going out for a bit, and getting a tiny bit done is the best practice.
In short, turn the gps on, start recording a track, go up a street,
note down the name of the street and anything interesting, come back
home and see if it worked.

Recommended options include setting the track interval to 1 second.
Exporting track to gpx format, and checking to see if it is recording
in lat/lon (WGS84) (default) rather than the OS GB grid references.

I'll be bringing my gps along, so if anyone hasn't got one, we can
share. Also, if mapping by car, two people is better than one, as the
passenger notes down stuff (via dictaphone, waypoint, paper, or
camera) .
