Firstly my thanks to all for replying both on and off list with some 
thoughtful replies.

It looks like the evening is going to have a nice table with power 
points as well for use so I'll be able to spread out. I hopefully will 
be able to drag along a dismembered PC and make it very much a hands on 
sort of session.

I was drawn mainly towards Ubuntu from ease of use - these are not 
necessarily people who have ever seen Linux so it needs to be relativly 
simple. Although I'd love to give them CentOS which is what my laptop 
runs I think that the lack of a LiveCD/install will hold it back (I know 
there is a LiveCD but you cannot install from it). I'll certainly be 
taking on board everyones comments regarding choices and also regarding 
it as a career decision. I came into IT 14 years ago now so have little 
real idea of what entry level stuff really is like now.
