Update: there was a very recent backup on my desktop, so I've wiped
and restored. I was a bit impatient to be able to use the laptop to
make notes today.

So far so good on it running stably. I'm guessing that the HD is
reaching end of life, so I've bumped up the priority of swapping out
the HD for a solid state drive in my budget.

Also, rsync/scp are made of win when you can move the computers within
cable range of the router. So much faster than copying stuff across to
memory sticks.
