Also, the SMART tools are useful for checking the drive's
internal diagnostics.

The Ubuntu package is "smartmontools", and the command you need
to run is:

sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda (assuming your disk is /dev/sda)

The "Reallocated_Sector_Ct" and "Current_Pending_Sector" figures
being > 0 is a classic sign of impending doom.
