And many small business have simply not afforded any new hardware in
the last few years. The one my daughter works for is still using a PC
that I bought for my grandaughter more than 10 years ago - I gave it
to them as a stop-gap when one of theirs fell over, and they still
haven't managed to replace it!
Good luck, Dave. I know the problem of weight, and which-ever
solution you choose, there are drawbacks. I'd be inclined to go for
the netbook and requesting keyboard and monitor wherever possible.
You'll need thumbdrives and an external DVD player, but even if you
need to carry that (I assume you won't, most of the time) there are
ultra-lightweight DVD players, such as the one from LiteOn.
FWIW, my netbook is dual-boot, and I manage fine both for my
embroidery design software classes (Windows 7) and KDE sprints and
Akademy. I carry it in my backpack onto the plane, together with my
eBook reader :-)
