You say that like it's a bad thing.  If those 5 ways really are redundant then 
three and a half of them will die naturally.  In practice you're likely to 
have both inexperienced users and expert users with different 
requirements/prorities, and the latter often have groups with conflicting 
requirements.

Note that none of this implies 5 completely redundant implementations. 
A corresponding benefit of open source is that good code can (and probably 
will) be shared.
