Thanks, I spotted my previous error and was ahead of you re vim-runtime.

It does contain this:

/usr/share/vim/vim72/spell/en.utf-8.spl

i.e. no GB

I don't suppose it's a locale problem, since loads on non-english spl
files are in that package.

I think I'll just take a look in all the vim debs.
