As a relative newby myself (who doesn't work in IT), I'd say the lack of a "don't panic!" introduction can be a real barrier to starting the "converting" process.

There are a couple of online guides from GBDirect, in Badford, at: http://www.linuxtraining.co.uk/download/ - but their 3-day "introduction" course costs a grand (which is a bit of a hurdle if one of the reasons for using free/libre software is because it is also free/gratis).

So far, the best intro I've found is just to buy a cheap second-hand laptop (without an OS), load a recent graphical distro on it, and spend time messing about with the thing.

I've been using Mint - and it is a doddle  ;-)
