I have just noticed,after looking for "APL programming language" on 
youtube, that  APL is the latest thing in systems programming and 
hardware control. 
APLX, a proprietary brand of APL , is being used to operate a FPGA. It sets 
it up as a specialist micro-processor, then runs a big data smoothing 
exercise using something called a "binning" algorithm and the FPGA  
beats the cpu hands down.
