Perhaps the solution is to do as I did and get a previously owned one where
the M$-tax has already been paid?

IBM won't supply Thinkpads without Windows. I checked recently with
their main Leeds distributor.

It's a shame really, because Thinkpads make excellent Linux laptops. My
600X is very well supported indeed.
