Pretty much any external modem (or internal ISA modem) should work
without any problems.

The only problems are with PCI "Winmodems".  Other PCI modems may
work--I've never seen one myself.

I use an external Diamond SupraExpress 56e PRO.  Diamond aren't noted
for their Linux support, but the modem works without any problems.
