I have found the answer, thanks for all your replies.

1. Log out of a normal xwindow (gnome) session.  At the splash screen
type 'root' at the keyboard (it wont show anywhere) and then you have
the choice of the installed xwindow systems (5 or 6 I think).

In Debian, the system-wide default window manager is a managed
alternative, called x-window-manager.  To configure it, run:

# update-alternatives --config x-window-manager

This can, of course, be overridden by the user, in their .xsession, or
wherever.
