I've narrowed it down to being /dev/sda1 because if I use for example
/dev/sdb1 the error message changes to not a valid block device.

Also, cat-ing /proc/scsi/scsi gets:

[root at dcomp2 root]# cd /proc/scsi
[root at dcomp2 scsi]# cat scsi
Attached devices:
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
Vendor: Freecom Model: FM-10 Pro Disk Rev: PROL
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
[root at dcomp2 scsi]# cat usb-storage-0/0
   Host scsi0: usb-storage
       Vendor: Freecom Technologies
      Product: USB Mass Storage Device
Serial Number: None
     Protocol: 8070i
    Transport: Bulk
         GUID: 04bb0c010000000000000000
     Attached: Yes
[root at dcomp2 scsi]#

This must surely only leave the filesystem and mounting it.
