I've been using SuSE on nearly all my machines for several years. Clearly, as
with other distos, things are constantly improving, and I think you would be
having a much better time with 8.2 or 9.0. Although 8.1 improved on the
features of 8.0, I didn't feel it was as solid as 8.0. 8.2 felt to me to be
back on track and 9.0 has been great so far, apart from sundry nightmares I
had updating older systems with reasonably fiddly lvm and raid setups.

Try a newer version!
