Yes it's possible. I've not done this myself - I have been lucky enough to
always have GNU/Linux servers, however many school users are in this
position.

I suggest you sign up to the suse-linux-uk-schools mailing list (which is NOT
SuSE specific) at
http://www.suse.com/us/private/support/online_help/mailinglists/index.html
and ask the question there as there are plenty of uk school based people who
have been there and done that, who would be happy to help.

Meanwhile, I would echo David's recommendation, and suggest that in particular
you reed the Winbind section in chapter 9 at
http://samba.mirror.ac.uk/samba/docs/using_samba/ch09.html
