[Wylug-help] ALSA Full Duplex/Crackly recordings

Hello,
I've been fighting with ALSA now to get full-duplex operation of the VIA
VT82C686 AC97 sound controller. OSS was working fine, but didn't seem to do
full-duplex. However, recording through line in produced good quality files.
Now that I've changed to ALSA in the vain attempt of getting things to work
in full duplex, recordings are very distorted and crackly. Nothing I can do
with the input volume or mixer settings seeems to make much of a difference.
As I'm using legacy software through snd-pcm-oss, I thought it might be
that. However, using arecord results in the same problems with poor sound
quality.
I'm at the end of my tether with this, have been on the case for about 8
hours. Anyone any clues? Would happily move back to OSS if there's a bodge
to get full duplex working (same sample/bitdepth/stereo mode for both
incoming and outgoing!)
Cheers,
nsj.
