Hi, Geoff.  Some of this is ringing bells.  I'm sure I have seen discussions
of problems like this on the Mandrake mailing lists, but I can't remember
what the outcome was.  I suggest that you start from
http://mandrake.vmlinuz.ca/bin/view/Main/MailingLists and follow the links
for the archives for the expert and newbie mailing lists - try the Marc
archives.  I think the problem was in some way connected with the 2.6 kernel
and usb modems - and I suspect that the answer was to try the 'expert'
install that lets you select a 2.4 kernel.  Otherwise, from that same page of
the Mandrake Community TWiki you could sign up for a mailing list for
specifically Mandrake help.  Be warned, though, that they are relatively
high-volume lists, and the newbie one in particular has a lot of noise - but
there's a lot of genuine help as well.
