If there are only 2 partitions on /dev/hdb then hdb2 is probably the
swap partition so it won't mount.
I'm not sure why knoppix won't make a grub disk. I did get the command
line wrong. It should be:
grub-floppy /dev/fd0
But you probably worked that bit out.
What version are you using. I use v3.8. The stage1 file is in
/lib/grub/i386-pc on my version. Maybe you need to be root but v3.8
works as the default user.
If you can find the grub files you can make the floppy with dd. If all
else fails I can email you an image.
