[WYLUG-help] still trying to get this machine to copy cds/dvds

Thanks, Nigel. The filename, having checked, is image. It is in the
directory /tmp. The last few lines when using the command cdrecord
-dev=/dev/cdrom1 /etc/image are:
Device type : Removable CD-ROM
Version : 0
Response Format: 2
Capabilities :
Vendor_info : 'LITE-ON '
Identifikation : 'LTR-52327S '
Revision : 'QS57'
Device seems to be: Generic mmc CD-RW.
Using generic SCSI-3/mmc CD-R/CD-RW driver (mmc_cdr).
Driver flags : MMC-3 SWABAUDIO BURNFREE FORCESPEED
Supported modes: TAO PACKET SAO SAO/R96P SAO/R96R RAW/R16 RAW/R96P
RAW/R96R
cdrecord: No such file or directory. Cannot open '/etc/image'.
which is the same result as for cdrecord -dev=/dev/cdrom1
/etc/image.iso, except for the last bit - Cannot open '/etc/image.iso'
I am lost. However, I just tried again as root and burned a CD from
another directory - but then I can't mount cdrom1 to read it:
Unable to mount the selected volume. The volume is probably in a format
that cannot be mounted.
and when I click "show more details":
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/cdrom1,
or too many mounted file systems
So I tried to burn another DVD using the full contents of a directory -
/directory_name/* and the last few lines I got are:
Device type : Removable CD-ROM
Version : 0
Response Format: 2
Capabilities :
Vendor_info : 'LITE-ON '
Identifikation : 'DVDRW SOHW-1213S'
Revision : 'TS08'
Device seems to be: Generic mmc2 DVD-R/DVD-RW.
cdrecord: Found DVD media: using cdr_mdvd.
Using generic SCSI-3/mmc DVD-R(W) driver (mmc_mdvd).
Driver flags : SWABAUDIO BURNFREE
Supported modes: PACKET SAO
cdrecord: Drive does not support TAO recording.
cdrecord: Illegal write mode for this drive.
Finally, I tried cdrecord -dev=/dev/cdrom1 /home/mike/fsb/* and the
output was:
cdrecord: No write mode specified.
cdrecord: Asuming -tao mode.
cdrecord: Future versions of cdrecord may have different drive dependent
defaults.
cdrecord: Continuing in 5 seconds...

So, unless I'm misreading what is going on, my system is very near to
being able to write CDs but DVDs still seem some way beyond it - or me!
:( Am I likely to have more success if I use the mkisofs command to put
the output somewhere other than /tmp?
There are a number of things I am failing to understand. First, I
thought /tmp was readable/writable by anyone, so why am I getting
variable results between /tmp and /home/user even as root (su)? The rest
of the list I am simply failing to understand! I am not even sure where
to start reading if there is some written material, online or elsewhere,
which may help.
As one last effort, each time I put a blnk CD or DVD into the
appropriate drive, a "CD Creator" box pops up. This time I threw a few
files and directories into it and clicked file>>write to CD and got
this, now seemingly familiar, output:
cdrecord: Cannot allocate memory. Cannot get SCSI I/O buffer.
SCSI buffer size: 64512
cdrecord: Warning: using inofficial libscg transport code version

Yesterday John Hodrien wrote: "assuming we've steered clear of the whole
ide-scsi pain" - well it would appear so from the above but I would
still like to be able to write CDs and DVDs using my FC2 box!
Many thanks for all of your efforts, but please keep them coming!
Best,
Mike
