Try:

1) Making sure any OSS compatibility modules are loaded. Almost nobody
uses the actual OSS drivers these days. snd_pcm_oss and snd_mixer_oss
are the ones you're looking for.

2) Try stopping and sound daemons. Likely culprits are artsd and esd.
They may be holding the sound device open.

Other than that, not a clue, sorry.
