There is a driver for ati cards on the repository too... Search for 
fglrx and install the fglrx-control and xorg-driver-fglrx or something. 
Google for the differences between this and the "official" one from ati. 
Also have a look on the ubuntuguide. Btw, I am running Ubuntu 6.06 
(Dapper) with an ati Radeon 9700.... Did not have a problem with the 
vesa driver and nor with the fglrx... In fact with the fglrx I also have 
TV-out support....
