[Wylug-help] hard drive sleep? .

hdparm may do what you want. But it doesn't work properly with SATA 
drives on my machines.

Try something like:

hdparm -Y /dev/hda              to turn it off
or
hdparm -S 20 /dev/hda           to set a low spin down time
