The output filename needs specifying, so I did:

  $ mencoder -oac mp3lame -o foo.mp3 foo.rec

But unfortunately that yields this error message:

  WARNING: OUTPUT FILE FORMAT IS _AVI_. See -of help.
  success: format: 0  data: 0x0 - 0x1e33800
  TS file format detected.
  NO VIDEO! AUDIO MPA(pid=433) NO SUBS (yet)!  PROGRAM N. 18112
  Video stream is mandatory!

Can MPlayer be persuaded to create audio-only files?  Cheers.
