[Wylug-help] 8.04 server wireless

I have installed ubuntu 8.04 server and 8.04 desktop onto a server. My 
problem is the desktop can use my wireless card - edimax - with no 
problems, but the server version can find the wireless card but can not 
scan for connections. I have tried

sudo iwconfig wlan0 up

then

iwlist scan

but says wlan0 no scan
how can I get it to work properly? I am using an old compaq proliant 380 
g1 in the garage because it is noisy so I need the wireless system.
