Sounds like wonky DNS.

BIND is a standard DNS *server*, so unlikely to be the cause of the
problem, as you're probably not running it.

You need to find out what name servers your machine is set to use.
They're listed in /etc/resolv.conf
They'll usually be picked up by DHCP - often your ADSL router will act
as a proxy for your ISPs name servers.
You may be better using OpenDNS, in which case you can use the network
manager to set the DNS servers to:
208.67.222.222
and
208.67.220.220
