In that case the solution was probably that you simply didn't need to do
any of them!  When Ubuntu (or any other distribution) packages some
software they don't just include the programs but also any associated
data and run any set-up scripts needed, make the config changes to start
services on boot, etc.  Usually when installing a package that's all you
need to do.

Upstream software providers such as MySQL have to provide instuctions
that work in general, including folks compiling from source (or even for
the people who _create_ Ubuntu packages).  Generally you can ignore such
instructions, or if that doesn't work search specifically for
Ubuntu-specific instructions.
