I Did

sudo tail -f /var/log/messages

again and inserted the memory card. All it gives is

Feb  7 21:44:23 bones-laptop kernel: [ 3579.308198] tifm_core:
MemoryStick card detected in socket 0:0

and a flashing cursor. So I am assuming it isn't allocating the device
anywhere or mounting it. Maybe this is a simple config alteration?

using lspci I get

08:06.0 CardBus bridge: Texas Instruments PCIxx12 Cardbus Controller
08:06.1 FireWire (IEEE 1394): Texas Instruments PCIxx12 OHCI Compliant
IEEE 1394 Host Controller
08:06.2 Mass storage controller: Texas Instruments 5-in-1 Multimedia
Card Reader (SD/MMC/MS/MS PRO/xD)
08:06.3 SD Host controller: Texas Instruments PCIxx12 SDA Standard
Compliant SD Host Controller
