I decided to try KNOPPIX.

I checked the DVD and CD versions: fortunately on a (Fedora 9( test box
(mainly used to test upgrades to VMware images).

After a boot and play with both DVD and CD the box would no longer reboot
other than from the removable media!  The boot section of the bios no
longer contains Hard Disk Drives (rather Removable Drives) and its not
seeing the SATA.  Oops - I will investigate that over the weekend.

Meanwhile I am reverting to plan A-: virtualise her portable: the snaggle
being that I intended to lend her my test box while the portable was
with Toshiba.
