Why restrict yourself to a browser? SSH in using X forwarding, and you can do
anything and everything you'd be able to do locally as you're already used to
doing it, whether graphical or console based.
Given your previous stated OS preference, why not just install Ubuntu LTS and
be completely familiar with it?
