Thanks for answering, Chris. I've had to abandon this altogether.
While I ate dinner Windows hibernated and I couldn't get it back up (I
use Windows quite a lot on the netbook, for my embroidery design
work). In fact I fought it for a long time, with and without the KVM.
I couldn't even get anything (either Windows or Linux) on screen
without any video attached - just using the built-in screen.
Finally I disconnected it from the mains, disconnected the battery,
gave it a rest, then reconnected, and got a display. After that fight
I don't feel inclined to pursue this.
The idea was to save space and make changing the video over easier.
The KVM came with lengthy cables, adding to the rats' nest already on
the desktop. It was nice to briefly have the ability to hear sound on
either system (video tutorials are generally useless without sound :-)
) but that's hardly enough benefit to continue fighting. The only
remaining decision is whether to send the unit back saying that it
didn't work correctly, or just write it off as experience.
I used a KVM a long time ago, and that worked fine. I remember
reading that others with the more modern USB KVMs were having
problems, but I assumed that after a couple of years or more they
would have been resolved.
