I was lucky enough that my card just worked on SuSE 10.1 when I
generated the rpm, installed it, switched to init 3, ran sax2 -r -m
0=fglrx

sax2 did all the updating of the xorg etc for me so there was no need
for all the extra steps you've taken in my case.
