[YLUG] Locale oddness

I've recently installed debian sarge on a system and finally got round to
setting the locales properly. I've run 'dpkg-reconfigure locales' to generate
english UTF8 and set that as default. In a console, the locale is right but in
X11 (started through gdm) it still uses non-UTF8 english :(  any suggestions of
where to look to sort this out?
