GStreamer:
I know its a back end, but doesn't it have a degree of gnomish affiliation? In which case why would you prefer xine as a backend to totem on a gnome system? May not something else minorish/subtle  get broken by removing ubuntu-desktop?

Flash-9 beta:
I've got it (hangs head in shame). It does seem to work ok. If we are offending a principle (which I think we should in this case), in order to "make the internet work", we should do the best job of this we can. No point in compromising with something that anyway doesn't do  what's wanted. 

Post install notes could advise upgrade to next release when it becomes available and also mention the free flashplayer effort.
