This applies to MCSE and friends, certainly - since my aforementioned
colleague got the four magic letters he's been having to beat the slave
traders off with a big stick.

Personally, when I'm interviewing job candidates (which seems to
happen with depressing regularity due to the McDonalds-like turnover
where I work) I'm more interested in their ability to solve problems
than what pieces of paper they have.

Everybody seems to have jumped on the certification bandwagon (who
wants or needs a PHP certification, ferchrissakes?!) and as a result the
whole thing has been devalued - MCSE and CCNA appear to be the two
exceptions to the rule, but given the companies responsible for their
administration etc. that's hardly surprising.

Maybe I'm getting cynical in my old age.
