The ubuntu install should let you use a FAT32 file system to read and 
write from the start if you set this up when you were installing Ubuntu. 
  Or at least every time I have installed ubuntu this is the case.  NTFS 
file system is different and I don't think anyone has managed to reverse 
engineer a read/writable version of this yet.

Sounds like you've selected to use a non standard shell.  Are you sure 
your path is set up correctly?  What happens if you type /usr/bin/sudo?
