ewww pptp ... at least you got further than I did.
I'd reccommend openvpn (http://openvpn.net/howto.html) it just works
(TM) and comes with linux & windows clients, it handily gives you a tun0
interface which behaves the same as eth0.
These days I'm mostly playing with socks over ssh thanks to the internet
filter at work.
