I think he'll probably find Xorg 7.3 in Gutsy Gibbon is "plug and
play" - things have improved markedly and all our LTSP stuff now all
works completely without xorg.conf - despite there being a few *very*
fussy cards in various systems.

I've got an old-ish PCI card from the Radeon 7500 era which works fine.

I'd highly recommend the Iiyama for other reasons, I've got a Philips
on my desk (work) and a combination of Dell / LG Flatron at home;
whilst the Philips is *very* good I think the image is ever so
slightly sharper on the Iiyama :) Nothing quite pegs the contrast on
the LG Flatron but those tend to be a fair bit pricier for a nice one!

Any idea if the Radeon 7500 is PCI or AGP, and I guess it doesn't have
a DVI interface? You may find things blur at 1680x1050 over VGA with a
cheaper-quality cable. YMMV.
