Not sure if this is of any relevance; I haven't really been following
this thread. I had a radeon 8500 that would lock up the system when I
started x. I fixed it by changing the xorg.conf file to use a the
generic xorg ati driver rather than the radeon driver. You could also
try using the vesa driver instead.
