Is fedora really that bad? With a few notable exceptions - non-raid/lvm to with, for instance - i've never had any trouble switching hardware around without modifying an initrd. And that includes shoving a hard drive in a completely different chassis, from time to time ;). Distro kernels i've come across always seem to have genericish initramfses...
In other news, all bow to the power of the htc touch pro! Linux on this will be my obsession project for jan, i think :D

The key thing is that if the hardware is different then the initrd
file will not work in the new system - so you will need to use
mkinitrd to create a new ramdisk file.
