I suggest you try wvdial - its the only way I ever got dialup to work;
admittedly this is several years ago. 

Once installed you run a setup program as root, which gives you a
template /etc/wvdial.conf. This just needs a little, very obvious
editing, after which running wvdial as root will make the connection.

I don't know if there are mandriva packages, but its a very straight
forward build from source code
